We saw our first major snake today after we heard a lady scream
nearby. It was about 4 ft long and all black. We thought it was either
a rat snake or a king snake. Can someone look up those 2 and see if
either match the description. Thanks!

Black Rat Snake: "a non-venomous colubrid species found in North America. It prefers heavily wooded areas and they are known for having excellent climbing ability, including the ability to climb the trunk of large mature trees without the aid of branches. Adults can become quite large and are known to reach up to eight (8) feet. When startled, they may freeze and wrinkle themselves into a series of kinks. If they feel further threatened, they may flee quickly or vibrate their tails in dead leaves (a form of mimicry, to make it sound like a rattlesnake)."
The Kingsnake, on the other hand, is described to have the color pattern consisting of a glossy black, blue-black, or dark brown ground color overlaid with a series of 23-52 white chain-like rings,so if there weren't rings on this snake, then it might have been a black rat snake!
I like snake. Do you like snake?

Chad,
It was great talking to you last night. I was glad to hear that you were in good spirits. Your adventures brings back memories of hitch hiking to Colorado and I'm jealous! I look forward to the day when I can join you on the trail.
Peace,
John
Hello from Mrs. Week's class. We're in library using the library databases and the Internet to try to find the answer to your question. We think it is a black ratsnake or a just a black racer. We don't think it is a King Snake because they live in the desert of Arizona.
i have done some research on this snake and it seems to be a black rat snake. please be cautios around this snake in particular. some are believed to be non-venomous but recent studys show some are deadly.
I hope you don't run into more snakes or anything else scarey. Well, unless you don't think they are scarey!
JV & TE
have you seen a bunny yes or no?
DH & KMS
were the mountains huge? did you see rabbits have you seen lots of deer?
Mr. DeVoe,
Our 9th period class agrees with the above people who believe the snake to be a rat snake. We discovered that there are two main venomous snakes to be aware of on the trail. These are the Copperhead and the Eastern Diamondback. Hopefully you will only see these from a distance!

Yo Mr. Devoe, This is Colton from Mr. D's enrichment. I think the snake you guys saw was a Black rat snake. I did some research and it looeked like it. See ya later!
it is a black rat snake, it really is harmless mostly, but if provoked, they actually can be deadly. Snakes are actually all harmless unless they feel threatened, it is best to just stay away from any snake that you are not sure what type it is. Good idea asking.
~Crissy
