One night in the Smokies was all it took to see if my bear canister
worked. Around midnight several of us woke to a loud growl as a couple
bears strolled into camp. I could hear them batting and scraping the
canister but they couldn't gain access to my 4 day food supply. They
mangeled it pretty good though and i found it about 75 meters from
where I placed it. Welcome to the Smokies!

CHAD! You're scaring me! Were you scared? Did they eat everyone else's food?
Please take care of yourself and be careful. Bears are extremely dangerous, as you well know. Keep going! We miss you here in Groton.
Holy cow!!! How long did you manage to find it?
D//
WOW that thing is beat!! Hmmmmm, the wise old sage said get some trekking poles and agreed with the extra weight of the bear canister!
I was wondering if you've had any encounters with bears yet. Glad your Bear Canister did it's job!
SO GLAD you had a bear cannister to protect your food supply! Did your hiking companions also have cannisters? Very exciting news - glad all is well. Mr. Wiech and I bought you some snacks today. We will try to get a small care package to you on the April 30th mail drop - any requests? Also, do you need us to send you a self-addressed stamped manilla envelope or flat-rate box to use to send your letters home so you don't have to carry them around? Or can you get those at the POs. Let us know what you need. Julie
Wow! Glad you are safe!
you should spray paint it day-glo orange so you can find it when the bears are done playing soccer
how was the rondevous with Kevin and Lucy? How are they holding up?
Hi, this is Ms. Kirby's class. This is the first post we've read! We have some questions for you. Did you see what kind of bears they were? And how big and how many were there? Was it scary? Did anyone get hurt? Was it exciting and cool? How close were they to you? Who were you camping with and did the bears try to get their food too? Thank you for taking the time to answer all of our questions!

several of you? how many sleep in a shelter at once? That sounds fun
What about you in the tent?!? Do you just hunker down into your sleeping bag and think if you can't see the bear, he can't see you? (That's what I did with monsters in the night....)
